  • “I am so humbled, appreciative and in shock about this incredible honor. I’d like to thank the Academy, Sony Pictures, the cast and crew of Moneyball, Brad Pitt, and, most of all, our brilliant director Bennett Miller.” — Jonah Hill, Best Supporting Actor nominee for 'Moneyball'
  • “It’s an honor to be nominated a second time; it is a personal accomplishment and triumph for women and women of color. I’m so glad the film has been recognized; it was a labor of love from the moment it was conceived, and it is rewarding to see the impact it is having.” -Viola Davis, Best Actress nominee for 'The Help'
  • “I am honored to be in company with such beautiful artists, and touched deeply by my fellow actors for their generosity in giving me this acknowledgment," -Meryl Streep, Best Actress nominee for 'The Iron Lady'
  • “This is an extraordinary honor. I am dizzy with joy…and caffeine. Considering both films, Moneyball and The Tree of Life, nearly didn’t make it to the screen, this is especially sweet...I am especially over the moon for Jonah (and the other Moneyballers acknowledged today), Terry Malick and the tribute this is to Billy Beane and the Oakland A’s organization. My congratulations to all the nominees … pancakes for everyone." -Brad Pitt, Best Actor nominee for 'Moneyball'
  • “I am so grateful to be acknowledged by the Academy...which was made possible by the support of our director Simon Curtis & the camaraderie of a terrific ensemble of actors. A special congratulations to Kenneth Branagh, and the fearless Harvey Weinstein. This role has been the challenge & privilege of a lifetime. I would like to think that the recognition our film has received by the Academy is a testament to Marilyn’s legacy.” -Michelle Williams, Best Actress nominee for 'My Week With Marilyn'
  • "I am so overwhelmed right now, I can't even tell you...It's going to be a fun time in the Best Supporting Actress category. This time last year, I was asleep. Last night, a big group of us, because we didn't know what was going to happen today, so we wanted to celebrate where we were, so there's a room full of people. We just kind of sleep wherever we were. And this morning we woke up & we all watched it together. I'm with Team Help." -Octavia Spencer, Best Supporting Actress for 'The Help'
  • “I am so grateful to the Academy for this recognition. I can’t help but stop and think about how incredible this journey has been. From filming on a Hollywood soundstage to the moment I received this wonderful news this morning, I’m so humbled to be amongst such distinguished and talented people. It is Michel’s beautiful film that has led me here today. I also share this with the brilliant cast and crew.” -Jean Dujardin, Best Actor nominee for 'The Artist'
  • “I’m overjoyed and filled with happiness. I can’t believe that a year ago I was learning how to tap dance and shooting in Hollywood studios and today I am nominated for an Academy Award. It was a thrill to work on a project as ambitious as The Artist and I am happy to share this moment with our visionary director, Michel Hazanavicius.” -Berenice Bejo, Best Supporting Actress nominee for 'The Artist'
  • “I actually asked my lawyer the other day what year I took out the first option on the George Moore short story (for Albert Nobbs), and it was 1988. I am so proud for our whole team that our little movie got three nominations. It’s phenomenal.” -Glenn Close, Best Actress nominee for 'Albert Nobbs'
  • “I am thrilled with our multiple nominations for The Help and War Horse. It is the first time that I have experienced two Best Picture nominations in the same year. One is a high honor. Two is humbling but very exciting. It is a tribute to all those who joined with Stacey Snider and our DreamWorks Studios team to develop and make these two films with stories that we passionately felt we had to make.” — Steven Spielberg, producer of 'Best Picture' nominees 'War Horse' and 'The Help'
  • “It’s a shot in the arm for a young kid of 82 to receive an Academy Award nomination this morning. My gratitude to writer-director Michael Mills, the Academy, and to everyone involved with Beginners.” -Christopher Plummer, Best Supporting Actor nominee for 'Beginners'
  • “This afternoon in Berlin I learned that I was nominated for an Academy Award in the category of Best Actor. You may have heard this before, but it has never been truer than it is for me today; it is extremely humbling, gratifying, and delightful to have your work recognized by the Academy, and to join the celebrated ranks of previous nominees and colleagues. Amazing.” -Gary Oldman, Best Actor nominee for 'Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy'

Early this morning, A-list stars woke up early to watch Jennifer Lawrence announce the nominations for the Academy Awards. Or, if they were too anxious to watch, they laid awake in their beds waiting for "the call." While the call didn't happen for everyone (GOSLING! We still love you, always + forever), a handful of bigtime movie stars' phones presumably blew up with kudos and congrats for their nominations -- including Brad Pitt, Michelle Williams, Viola Davis, Jonah Hill and Meryl Streep (obvs).

The Academy certainly went with much higher brow nominees this year which I think will lose them a large portion of their young audience. After doing better at being in touch with the public the past two years, these stiff nominees just fall flat. I usually have something in common with the choice but not this year- if the contenders seem stuffy to you, check out my own Top 10 Movie Picks of 2011 at http://dregstudiosart.blogspot.com/2012/01/top-10-movie-picks-of-2011.html where you won’t see a single of the Academy’s nominees for Best Picture but you will get some movie artwork I drew up as well as the reviews!
