Oscars 2011: James Franco Loses Energy For the Big Night

Final thoughts about James Franco and Anne Hathaway’s hosting performance at the 83rd Academy Awards last night, Sunday, February 27th, came in and they’re not looking good – at least for Franco!

The New York Times writes, “Distracted and blasé” and The Hollywood Reporter says James straight-up “bombed.” So what happened?

A TV executive told PopEater, “This was a disaster. Before the show began something was wrong with James. His live interview on ABC backstage should have been a warning sign. He was awkward and looked as if he knew what a terrible evening was ahead for all of us.”

As the evening rolled on, it appeared that James was more concerned with his cell phone and Twitter than the big night. He posted more than 20 short videos to his Twitter followers throughout the evening.

Another factor sources are saying is lack of preparation for the big star. Because of his class schedule at Yale on the east coast, he was only able to rehearse on the weekends before flying back to school. But sources still believe it was his energy level that caused it.

“I’m not sure what happened,” a source told PopEater. "At rehearsals James and Anne were on fire. It seemed 20 minutes into the show as if James lost interest and just gave up while nerves might have gotten the better of Anne." Yikes!

They started out good, but then, yes, Anne looked as if she was trying desperately to carry James along (especially toward the end of the show) and get him to engage in what he was doing, but that sure made for some awkward tv.

Bring back Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin next year.
